Do you see things as a problem or a challenge? Do you find yourself stuck and unable to make a decision or move on? The answer to these may lie in your mindsets and paradigms. These have a major effect on how we live our lives, deal with challenges and problems along the way. Steven R Covey in his book ‘The seven habits of highly effective people’ suggests that ‘the way we see the problem is the problem’. He is highlighting that our view of an issue shapes how we interact   with others and these have consequences. By changing our view/paradigm or mindset we can reach a different outcome, overcome challenges and problems that are within our control or those we can influence. This allows us to achieve our potential and live a more enjoyable life with lower stress.

I have spent the past twenty years working with people within the dental profession and the corporate world helping them develop mindsets that help overcome challenges and problems, by using mentoring and coaching. Along the way I have been fortunate to have worked in general dental practice, hospitals, universities, including at senior management positions, as well as board level and so understand some of the issues of working in these places. It has given me the chance to learn from some very talented people, understand successful mindsets, all of which I can draw on as a mentor. I have found creating a relaxed fun environment for coaching and mentoring leads to some amazing results.

When I qualified it seemed like the dark ages (1970 to be precise); we had very little information about NHS dental practice life after graduation – no vocational training, financial advice, relatively little support from colleagues, a smaller range of dental materials to use and few details about the regulatory side of dentistry.

The changes in my years in practice have been enormous – most very good (DF1 Training for example) but some in more recent years that have made day-to-day practice more difficult and worrying. A young dentist just embarking on their career has immediate money concerns and faces working under and being aware of all the NHS Rules and Regulations, the current NHS contract and in a lot of cases a fear of GDC involvement or litigation if there is a patient complaint.

I have worked for over 20 years in general dental practice. In that time, a great deal of knowledge and experience was gained by encountering the vast majority of situations dentists will meet working in this discipline. In addition to this, I have experience as a Dental Practice Inspector with NHS Forth Valley,

For a number of years now, I have also been working as an expert witness.

Since qualification in 1996, I have worked very hard to ensure that my clinical practice has been patient centered with the patients’ needs, well-being and comfort put far and away above any other consideration. I believe that is why I enjoyed a successful, busy, enduring practice with a loyal patient base.

I am a mentor and coach for dental practitioners who wish to grow their practices, and are looking for a practicing dentist with over 30 years’ experience of practice ownership, who can effectively guide them towards their business, clinical and personal goals. I enjoy helping people be the best they can be, and I provide the safe space for dentists to be able to plan and envision their growth and explore solutions to their challenges.

My experience comes from being a business owner, leading my own team and winning many national awards, including the first practice to achieve Investors in People, and Private Dentistry Team of the Year. I am passionate about collaborative teamwork and developing DCP led preventive care pathways for patients.
